DAY 44 - 45 (6/16 - 6/17): Lazy Days in Seward
To get from Homer to Seward we drove back on the Sterling/Seward Highways. On our way out of Homer we caught this funny pic of the seagulls chasing the fish gut transport, which is a daily occurrence!
We stopped at a couple more breweries to stock up on drinks (Cider for me...T-Shirts and beer for Barry!).
At the intersection of the two highways (Seward & Sterling) there is a beautiful lake (Tern Lake) that looks like a mirror - it is more "mirrory" than Yosemite's Mirror Lake, which was sadly dry when we last visited during the drought. We ate our lunch there - great spot!
We were pretty wiped out from our time in Homer (I know, life is rough right?), so we just stopped at a local brewery for a drink, and then had charcuterie at camp and called it a night! Our camp for the next two nights in Seward is called Resurrection Camp. All of the city's campgrounds are along the waterfront!Seward is not very big town - you can basically walk from one end (pier/train depot) to the other end (downtown) - it is only about a mile long! Our camp is basically in the middle, so we walked everywhere instead of getting our bikes out.
The Kenai Fjords Visitor Center is located in Seward. There are a lot of marine life tours that depart from here, but we felt as if we saw a ton already from both our ferry ride and fishing trip (whales, seals, otters, puffins...). The city is also "Alaska's Mural Capital", and they are well known for their Mount Marathon Race on July 4th (people basically do a 5K up this gigantic mountain and back down - apparently it is quite a sight to see).
While it was foggy in the morning, the sun came out by afternoon and we could enjoy the beach.
This was our last day on Alaska's coast, so we thought we should eat as much seafood as possible (even though we did buy some fresh frozen salmon & halibut from Salmon Sisters for later). We chose a great restaurant on the pier for fish & chips and smoked salmon rice bowl.
This was a nice two nights of R&R...I got some sewing done, and Barry did a bit of sketching. Tomorrow we head back to Alaska's interior!
GOOD NIGHT!
Miles driven: 196 (From Homer to Seward)
