DAY 33 (6/5): Canada to US (Beaver Creek to Fairbanks)
Today we drive to Beaver Creek, then Fairbanks to stock up before Denali and check out this major city in Alaska. I had not realized that this would be the furthest north we would be on this trip and that we would cross another time zone and gain an hour - yay!
Beaver Creek is the "Most Westerly Community" in Canada.
Welcome (back) to Alaska!
I was able to get a shot of the map that shows the various entities that manage lands in Alaska:
The scenery along this stretch is equally as stunning as yesterday.
Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge had a great video on the importance of setting aside lands for the migration of the many species of birds that rest here and refuel for their long journeys from as far away as South America, even swans!
We stopped in Delta Junction, which is the northern terminus of the Alaska-Canada Hwy & Richardson Highways.
They have a beautifully restored "roadhouse" in town (Sullivan Roadhouse), which shows where one may have stayed if "touring" through the area in the early 1900's.
As we approached Fairbanks we could not help but stop in "North Pole" Alaska...yes, folks, there is a town called North Pole. Obviously, they celebrate all year round - check out the banners on the street (...and remember it is summer right now).
We also caught a glimpse of the Alaskan Pipeline across this river - will go see more of it tomorrow:
Our home for the next 2 nights - River's Edge RV Park:
GOOD NIGHT!
Miles driven: 359
