DAY 9 (5/12/24): Custer State Park!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!  We saw a lot of mama's today...more on that in a sec...first, take a look at this farm fresh bacon from Fuller Farm - so good!

We headed to Custer State Park for a deep dive.  What an amazing park!  From Keystone we drove on Iron Mountain Road, which took us through the first 3 of their 6 one lane tunnels.  These are the tallest and widest ranging from 11'-13' wide, and ~11' tall.  No problem for Curiosity, here we go through the first one (excuse the bug guts on the windshield)!

Actually the most amazing view was looking back after passing through - Mt. Rushmore in the distance!

Dad looking on as we enter Tunnel #2:

OK...more tunnels later.  We headed onto the Wildlife Loop, and here is where we saw all the Mama's!  So many babies!!!!

...and many other animals!

Their Bison Center was pretty cool.  We learned that they do an annual "round-up" of the herd (~1,400 head) in the Fall to cull, check on their health, and vaccinate.  They can't let the herd get too large because of the limitations of pasture land.  They have a small processing facility on property, and sell Bison meat to help fund the park.

Here are views of us going through Tunnel #4:

The most interesting was Needle Eye Tunnel!  They warned that this one was going to be 8'W x 9'9"H, but we made it through no problem :)

The granite spires within the park are not like any we have seen in other areas of the US.

This is Sylvan Lake...feels a little like some of the Mammoth Lakes, but smaller and with gigantic granite boulders coming out of it!  Saw some fish jumping and fishermen catching.  We had the itch, but hope to have other opportunities as we go...

It has only been a week and Dad already underwent some repair under Dr. Barry Chung's skillful care tonight - let's hope he lasts the whole trip!

GOOD NIGHT!

Miles driven: 106
