DAY 51 - 52 (6/23 - 6/24): Klondike Hwy & Whitehorse
From Dawson City to Whitehorse we had a very long drive (7 hours) on the Klondike Highway.
For much of the drive we follow the Yukon River. The roads vary from paved to un-paved...and we see some fires as well (mostly caused by lightening, but fueled by the dry conditions).
Since we are in Whitehorse for only two nights/one day, and in dire need to do major laundry and a car wash, the stay ends up a bit of a "pit stop" for us in an Airbnb. In addition, it is Monday, and many things are closed.
Driving around town we come across what is allegedly to be the world's largest weathervane (the museum it is located at is closed, and we learn later what it is...we were wondering why it was turning and creaking!).
At the Visitor Center we see people are checking in for the annual Yukon River Quest, which sounds like an awesome marathon race that takes teams from Whitehorse to Dawson City (that is where we just drove from!) by canoe, kayak, paddle boards. You can read all about it here.
We took the ~5k walk along the river which leads to the fish ladder, magnificent views of the river, old steam boat, and beaver lodges.
That's about it! Tomorrow is an even longer drive to Muncho Lake (halfway point between Whitehorse and Dawson Creek (not to be confused with Dawson City).
GOOD NIGHT!
Miles driven: 338 (Dawson City to Whitehorse), 14 (Around town...)
